Always ready to corrupt others with my love for bunnies, I took my friend One Badass Mother to the bunny show last weekend :) Technically it was a small animal show, they had pidgeons and geese and turkeys as well, but cute as they are, I was there for the bunnies. My friend didn't think she liked rabbits, because of a bad experience when she was a child. She never really understood my love for these little critters, and that was something that had to be changed. We had a good time, and were even thought to be "the press", with our superduper professional looking camera bags ;) Small town living.

Unfortunately they had no angora's, but the other bunnies were all adorable, and I loved how all the breeds had different personalities. The little dotted Mini Rex's were our favourite, very active little boys and girls, very curious and not at all nervous. And a lovely coat too. Maybe, one day..

I take a long walk alone with Sofie a few times a week, usually on these roads. It's beautiful there, I've shown pictures before I think. Right now, autumn time, it's the best. I love how everything looks different every day, new colours, less greens and more reds and yellow, it's gorgeous. And these berries, aren't they lovely? My mom always took some home from the park, but these were growing in a private garden, unfortunately.

Sometimes I even get to see wild life, birds of course, and squirrels, sometimes even deer, though I have to get up early for those. Today I got very close to a pheasant, I guess he wasn't really paying attention as I could get within less than a meter before he realised Sofie and I were there.

It’s a pretty awesome idea if I wouldn’t have issues editing pictures and writing
blog posts during work time or when some one is around. I need some me-time for
blogging and I’m not having a lot of those me-time moments currently. It’s okay
though, work is busy and the company is good :)

He was meant as a team pony for my Roller Derby league, to be auctioned out, but
I didn’t think the colours were quite right once I finished him. We raised a
lot of money without him though, and I got to keep him with me a little longer.
But it’s time for new adventures for this little pony, and he is looking for a
new home, you can find him in my Etsy store.

design by Heidi Bears, she is also on Etsy if you're not a Ravelry member (is that even possible?).
If you like animals and you like crochet, you should definitely check out her
patterns. Don’t worry if you’re new to crochet, Heidi writes out her patterns
so well and has so many pictures, every one can follow them. And if there is something you can’t
figure out, she has a group on Ravelry crowded with helpful people and
I’m sure she’s more than willing to answer questions by mail.

And this is an other reason: Pumpkins!
So very delicious to eat and oh so pretty as decoration. I'd place them all over my house if my partner wouldn't stop me.. There's a little farm store close to where we live that sells all sorts
of thingss throughout the year. Always the lovliest freshest fruits and
vegetables, honey, marmelade, sometimes soap or other goodies they get
from locals. They have a "pick your own flowers" garden and sell the
prettiest sunflowers I've ever seen. Fresh out of the field, so they
stay pretty for a long time at home.

I always love visiting them, they
are the nicest people too.

This day we got pumpkins. Two smaller ones, that I haven't used yet, and
one big one that gave me over 4kg of pumkin flesh. I made a whole lot
of soup and even though I'm usually not really a big fan of soup,
pumpkin soup is the best. We ate it with my dearest GG's freshly baked bread and some soft goats cheese.

Omnomnomnom!

GG carved up the rest of the pumpkin into a super awesome cute little kitty Jack O' Lantern. Isn't it adorable? It is!

And when I start cooking, I can't stop. These apples came from the same farm we got the pumpkins from, I made a lovely apple sauce out of it, with extra cinnamon. Used honey as sweetener, as I'm trying to cut all refined sugar out of my diet, trying to live a more healthy life. I think it tastes even better than sugar.

Use about 100 - 150 grams of honey for 1kg apples.

Some almost-healthy banana muffins to finish my kitchen time. Ran out of ingredients to make more stuff ;)
The recipe is from 'How to be a Domestic Goddess' by Nigella Lawson.

Now to think of all the lovely things I can do with my other pumpkins. And the new pumpkins I'm totally going to buy over the next few weeks. It's only pumpkin time once a year, after all. Eat ALL the pumpkins!

What's you're favourite pumpkin recipe?
Earlier this week I got this idea that will hopefull motivate me a little to finish my bigger works in progress. Finished Friday. Every friday I will have finished one big (ish) project, take a good picture of it, play with editing a little and write about it on my blog. I have lots of project bags lying around, so there should be enough for me to choose from. And otherwise.. well.. I can always start new projects and finish them in time.

For this week it's not going to be anything craftsy though.
Today we harvested our patatoes! That's sort of like finishing a project, right?

We dreamed of a tower filled with potatoes, but that didn't really work out as good as we had hoped, we only had one layer of the tower filled with potatoes.. We still got a lot though, for a little garden experiment. We don't eat them very often, so this should get us pretty far untill harvest time 2014.

Oh, excuse me the geeky title.

Just like my friend One Badass Mother, I decided to work on my photography skills. We seem to have a way of motivating eachother to try out new things and work harder on things we were already doing. I suppose about 22 years of friendship can do that, even though our lives got in the way and we're not joined at the hip anymore, like we were in pre-school. Whatsapp rocks :)

So. Photography. I think I've always taken decent pictures, just not mind blowing you know? I didn't really know how some of my settings work, and editing on the computer? Err.. Click some buttons, and tadah!? No, usually more of "ta...meh." I decided to get Lightroom and to start shooting in RAW. Something that has been scary for a while, but just like so many things, I should have done it a long time ago. I also decided to try using some more buttons on my camera, and, well, it helped! These are some pictures I took this week. I especially like the pidgeon picture. I love birds, so maybe I'm a little biased. Long way to go, but learning things is fun, and I hope to see some improvement over the next months.

PS: the sheep was super scary to photograph. He got a little pissed off at me and my camera, he was threating me like an angry bull. Stomping is hoof and all, I basicly risked my life! But look, he's so pretty..

I had seen these cute little jar cozies on Pinterest, but never managed to find nice patterns for them. All I could find were simple granny paterns, and that was just not really what I liked. I set the idea aside for a while, until I stumbled on crochet stitch diagrams and realised I don't need a pattern specifically for jar cozies, any crochet pattern would do. So I created these three. They are small babyfood jars I got from a friend, perfect size for a little tea light. I will make more over the next week, to bring to an autumn/winter fair. My first time on a fair with a stand, eek, scary!

Don't get me wrong, I do love warm summer days, and especially loved the evenings we spent at the nearby lake past summer. Swimming with our dogs, enjoying the evening sun. I loved having dinner in the garden, and playing with the little pool. I loved making little camp fires in our garden, of those of friends, and just talk and have a good time. Picking berries with my man, and the blue skies. Summer is good.

But autumn is better :)

I prefer colder temperatures, I love how good everything smells when it has rained, the sound of rain pouring down, the wind in the trees. I love the red and orange colours the leaves turn into, and kicking them up when I walk down the street. You never get too old for that. Curling up on the couch with a blanket, a cup of steaming hot tea and a home made muffin. Lighting some candles, a little incense and listening to some music, or reading a book. Or listening to a book while crocheting, a perfect combination. Back to crocheting blankets, and this winter I am going to learn how to knit. For real.

Although everything is still green, the little forest we like to visit is definitely showing signs of autumn.
I'm sure things will get more quiet soon, and there will be more wool dyeing, crocheting and photographing. We're also planning to build a bigger run for our bunnies, and then finding a new addition to our bunny family, real actual wool bunnies. Aren't they pretty? I'll make sure to spam them until you can't see them anymore ;) I'm hoping to find one or two angora bunnies from a shelter, two males to have "helped" and then match with my two girl bunnies.
But first we need to finish their house. This posts' first WiP.
Works in progress is all I can show you at the moment really. Last week I took the time to take pictures of most of my wips for my Ravelry pages, I don't like having projects without pictures on my projects page, somehow it's very motivating to see the progress shots of my work.

My last ever 100% acryl project. Ever. It's funny how my ideas about wool quality have changed over the past year. I always figured: why spend 5, 6,10, or even more euros on yarn when there are also one or two euro yarns. I'd buy €2.20 cotton, but that was about the most I'd spend on yarn. Untill I did buy prettier yarns, I was spoiled forever, a proper yarn snob. I will have to finish this project though, it will be fine for picknicks, and for the bed in the guestroom, to make it a little less of a boring place.

Extra fine baby merino. One of the spoilers. So, so, so pretty. And so soft, oh my.. And as if that wasn't enough, it has another great quality: when I dye it, the colours become so very vibrant! Just look at those colours, the golden yellow is dyed with onion peels, the orange with madder. Just gorgeous, I was thrilled when I took them out of the dyeing pot and washed them out. The african flowers will become a little pony, another Heidi Bears pattern, still obsessed ;)

So bad even, that I currently having four Heidi Bears animal WiP and one more project planned, woops! An other pony, in the team colours of my Roller Derby league, see below. This pony is becoming a pegasus, as we're the 'Arnhem Fallen Angels', I just had to.. She's almost done, I will probably show her later this week.

This is crazy. I know. Fully aware. But I just love a crafty challenge. These teeny tiny flowers are going to become a teeny tiny hippo. Not making very quick progress, I can only work on it with good (day)light. So much fun to make though, and I can't wait for it to be finished, in all it's cuteness.

This stuff people, baby alpaca wool. With silk. So. Very. Soft. I just have to pet it, and hold it against my face to feel the softness of it. I'm making a baby blanket out of it.

I'm a bit of a Drops/Garnstudio girl at the moment. The red and blue pony is being done with Drops Safran, a very soft cotton, although a little splitty, and the baby merino is from Drops as well. Most of my former projects were made with Drops yarns too, now I think of it. Their yarn is affordable but at the same time of a good quality, very good stuff for those prices.

That was it for now. I'm off to my bed. Night night lovelies x
Plants and fruit are growing good! The first tomatoes are starting to grow on our plants. In the picture is the big tomatoe we have, but the cherry tomatoes are doing very good as well. Lots of little flowers, and the first tiny green tomato babies. We were worried about them, because the potatoes were being kind of rude and hanging all over them. Tomatoes are apparently tough little buggers and grow right through them. The blue berries are already picked and eaten. Not as many as we hoped, but they were delicious!

And beets girls and guys, just look at them with their pretty red and white circles.

The weather has been fabulous. Very warm, maybe a little too warm but the plants liked it, so it's all fine. We took our doggies to the local lake. Little Daisy didn't like it one bit. While she usually likes to play with other doggies, now she just got moody and chased them all off, growling, having little maltese tantrums because we were swimming and she didn't dare. I'm afraid we did have a little laugh over her.

My sweet shepherd Sofie though, she was a hero! She has never swam before, didn't dare either, but now we were in the lake as well, she put on her brave hat and swam right to us. Such a brave puppy! After a few rounds of swimming she even seemed to enjoy it. And what's better than a normal cuddle? A wet cuddle :)

Right now things are getting back to normal with more craftsy time, so I will try and post more regularly.

Right now I want to talk onion peel dyeing! I'll give you a little tutorial. It's one of the the most simple plant dyes and it's almost free, if you regularly use onions for cooking, you'll have enough for a small batch of wool in no time. If you do not use onions, maybe you can ask some one to collect the peels for you.

Although I generally dye on a wood fire, you can totally do it in your kitchen in a (old) pot.

What you will need:

For 100 grams of wool, you will need 100 grams of onion peels. Only use the hard and dry outer part.

For a mordant you need alum in powder form. You can buy this online or at your local pharmacy. You only need about 15 grams foor 100 grams of wool, so look around a little. Some shops only sell them in 1kg jars.

You need a cooking pot of at least 3 litres, but bigger means more room for the wool, which means a more even dye. Don't go overboard, you won't need a huge soup pan, but at least make sure there is plenty of room for the wool and peels.

If you want to dye more than 100 grams of wool, just multiply the ingredients, and use a bigger pot.

Now, to prepare:

I like to let my onions peels soak for a night. Just put them in a jar or bowl with water. Do it the night before you are going to dye, to give them a night to soak, a lot of the dye will already come out of the peels, making it easier to go right into the wool when you put the peels and the water in the bath dye pot.

In front is a bowl with madder roots, I was dyeing both at the same time that day, and they too were soaked. I also dyed a little more than 100 grams, so don't be confused by my amount of onion peels.

Your wool needs to be in a skein, and to prevent it from forming knots in the dye bath, tie it together with short strings of a dark colour (so you can find them back) in a few places. Don't tie them too tight!

Dyeing Day:

You have your dyeing pot, alum powder and soaked onion peels, time for the fun part!

First you also need to soak your wool, put it in luke warm water and just let it sit there to absorb the water. This makes it easer to absorb the alum mordant later, and the wool won't get too much of a (felting) scare when it's put into the warm water.

Then it's time for the mordant. Put enough water in your pot for the wool to move freely, but don't forget you will still need to add the onions and their water as well. You don't put in the wool yet! Let it soak a little longer. While the water is warming up, mix 15 grams of alum in a cup with hot water, let it desolve. When the water in your pot is luke warm, put the alum in it, and stir until it's mixed with the rest of the water. Now you can put your wool in. Let the water reach boiling point, and let it slowly boil for 60 minutes. Don't worry about felting, wool is sensitive, but because you let it warm up slowly, it will be fine.

After an hour, you'd best take out your wool for a bit, just lay it aside, so you can pour in the onion peels and the water they are in. I love seeing how the water turns orange right away, and just imagining how pretty the wool is going to get. When the onion peels are in, and spread evenly in the pot, you can put back your wool. Right now, the water should not boil anymore, you want to keep it just before boiling point. If it does boil a little, just turn the fire lower. You need to keep in in for an other hour, but I usually give them a little more time, about half an hour longer.

Don't forget to take a peek and see how the wool is getting its new gorgeous colour.

You don't have to stay in the kitchen the entire time, but you will have to keep stirring it every now and then. This is so you won't get extra dark spots where onion peels have been sitting on the yarn for an entire hour. Don't worry if it happens after all, even though you have been sitrring all the time, it still happens to me sometimes, and aren't those little flaws the charm of hand made things?

When your wool is dyed, you take it out of the bath. I like to hang it up to cool first, before rinsing out the dye. But as long as you use warm water, you can also rinse right away. Just put in in the sink and let water pour over it, you can pick it up, and move it around a little, but do not squeeze, your wool has been through a lot and you don't want it to felt right at the end! Just let the water rinse through. Most of the times the colour will become a little less intense, that's all the excessive dye that's not absorbed by the wool, some wools absorb the colours better than others. This was my first experiment with merino and I was delighted, so pretty!

When no colour is coming out anymore, you are done, that is the new colour of your yarn! Find a place to dry it. You can dry your wool outside, just try to find a place in the shadow. When the weather is bad, I sometimes hang my dyed yarns in the shower to dry. Anywhere is good.

And then, one or two days later, after it has dryed and been rolled up in a ball or skein, admire your beautiful, beautiful natural coloured yarn.

My onion dyed merino is going to become a cute little African Flower pony, together with the madder merino I dyed on the same day, and some more, lighter onion orange that I will dye later this week. As you can see, my wool has little flecks of lighter colour, I did tie my strings to keep it all together too tight. It was my first time dyeing merino, and apparently it needs extra loose strings. You'll always keep learning.

I hope you will love natural dyeing as much as I love it, and always feel free to ask me questions.

Enjoy! xxx
We visited the Duisburg Zoo two weeks ago. Some German zoo's are closer to where we live in the Netherlands than the closest Dutch zoo, and usually much more fun. Bigger, so more space for the animals, more species and well, they have "curry wurst"! Duisburg Zoo has a lot of monkeys, which is good, because I. Love. Monkeys. And this species of monkeys are the best. I had never seen them before, King Colobus they are called. Look at their little grumpy, dissaproving faces, adorable! I might need to crochet one. Using this pattern for instance, and giving it a little grumpy mouth and long hairs.

There were more animals of course. I especially loved the sloth that lived in the monkey hall. He's got ropes hanging from the roofs, on which he could hang and move to some islands with trees. Right above our heads, you could touch him if you wanted to. Highlight of my zoo visit my friends, I love that sloth!
Somewhat jealous of the little girl in the boat with the dolphins,
Potatoes in bloom, beets are growing, tomatoes finally planted outside, we're having new strawberries everyday and we bought a table so we can finally sit outside. We've been eating outside every good day since we have it, it's so nice. I absolutely love how our garden looks right now, it finally feels like *our* garden.
June was one of those months where you'd wish a month had 60 days instead of 30. Busy busy. Work has been great in the first two weeks lots of hours for me, but right now there is no work at all, that's what you get as freelancer. But: more time to crochet! With a bit of a pessimisctic partner, I try to always see the positive things. Except there was not more time to crochet, I did a lot of gardening, caring for friends, watching my good friends' baby on thursdays. But right now things are slowing down and I'm actually getting some hookery done. No mosaik though.

I loved my Happypotamus so much, I imediately purchased *this pattern* for the teddy bear. So pretty! I made him out of merino wool, so he is super soft. A little more complex to put together, I'm afraid some swearing has been heard in our little house, but here he is, lovely little pink Lollo Bear:
I've talked and thought about it for years, but finally kicked myself in the butt and opened my Etsy store. I have been taking and editing new pictures, writing descriptions and finding out about shipping costs all day today. It's very exciting and also a little bit scary. I still need a banner, but couldn't wait to open up my very first little store:
Rather proud of my almost professional looking pictures. It seems like Etsy makes them look a little less colourfull though, have to think of that next time I edit pictures. Well, that was a day well spent. I'm off for some hookery, want to finish my lovely pink and brown Lollo Bear.

I live in a small town in the eastern part of the Netherlands. I haven't lived here all my life, I was born in Gouda, close to Rotterdam. Spent most of my teenage life in Rotterdam, and found my love GG there. He was studying in Rotterdam, but born in Winterswijk, this small town in the eastern part of the Netherlands. Five or six ago, we moved to a flat here, two years later GG bought us a house.

There isn't much to do here, our garden is too small to keep pony's, our neighbours get upset about unkept gardens and we're surrounded by them, let's just say: Holland is not Sweden, but what I absolutely love about this town, is the rural area around it. I only need to walk for ten minutes to get out of town, and feel free in this little pretty landscape with old farm houses, cows, horses, sheep, and my little puppy dog of course.
I take this walk almost daily, together with Sofie, who likes to run up and down the dirt roads chasing pinecones I kick away for her. It's nice and quiet, even on the days with good weather, I hardly see anyone else walking or cycling there. Crazy, it's such a pretty place.

GG is away all day, first a job interview and after he's visiting friends who live on the way back. I'm making myself pesto pasta and enjoying a well needed day alone.

I'm spending it admiring our potatoe plants, watching crime series, drinking tea and working on my blanket a little, and the second Happypotamus I just *had* to start. I have the African Flower Bear pattern as well, but I first need to buy some hooks, which I forgot to order with my last big wool order. Oh well, peanut butter, will get them next week.

This cutie came to live with us two weeks agao. She totally got here by accident, I just can't say no to a sweet bunny who needs a home. She doesn't have a proper name yet, right now we're calling her "Metal Headje" because of her lovely long black hair, it will probably stick. I'm hoping to match her to our other bunny, but so far, they're not really liking each other, bunnies are mean ladies.
